The Boardman Board of Education has selected Thomas Varley, 46, of Boardman, as the newest member of it five-person board.
Varley was among some 20 persons who expressed an interest in the post following the resignation in August of Frank Zetts. He will fill the seat vacated by Zetts resignation until Dec. 31, 2025
“ I have thought a lot as to what my next role would be in helping our community. This position is one that I feel will fit me best at this stage of my life,” Varley said in a letter of interest he sent to the school board.
“This opportunity will offer me great insight and experience to run a good campaign in the future for this same seat. My goal, if selected, is to add as much value as possible and be a part of this great team for as long as I can,” he added.
Varley joins John Fryda, board president; and Candace Rivera, Vickie Davis and John Landers on the school board.
He and his wife, Kim, are the parents of four children, one a Boardman High School graduate and three more who are currently enrolled in the system.
Varley is a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Youngstown State University.
Since 2011, he has served as director of human resources at Compco, a tank-head firm located in Columbiana, where he is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day functions of the Human Resources Department.
“With my professional experience in service, I believe I can be a great asset and addition to the school board and help in continuing the growth throughout our entire district,” Varley said.
He currently serves as a member of the Boardman Township Zoning Board of Appeals and is a member of the Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence.
The school board granted interviews to ten candidates who expressed an interest in the school board seat. In addition to Varley, they were Cristina Beggs, teacher at West Boulevard Elementary School; Tom Davis, former principal of Carrollton High School, Springfield Local High School and Bell-Herron Middle School; Jenna Fox, assistant director of enrollment management at Kent State University/Trumbull campus; Jason Loree, Boardman Township administrator; Yasmine Makridis, attorney with the Northern District of Ohio U.S. Attorney’s Office; Debra Mettee, former superintendent in the Springfield Local School District; R. Scott Murray, a Boardman firefighter; Anthony Valentini, director of sales for City Printing; and Thomas Wakefield, chair of the department of math and statistics at Youngstown State University.
