Cam Thompson Transfers To Mississippi State
Former Boardman High School Standout Leaves Northern Illinois:   January 16, 2025 Edition
Former Northern Illinois receiver Cam Thompson (Boardman HS) will transfer to play for Mississippi State in the 2025 football season. He spent the past two seasons with the Northern Illinois Huskies and brings two years of eligibility with him to Starkville.
Thompson appeared in 11 games for NIU this past season and finish with 28 catches for 391 yards and three touchdowns.
He also served as a kick returner with nine returns overall on the year, including an electrifying 91-yard kick-off return against Western Michigan that he brought back for a score, breaking a 21-21 tie in the game that NIU won.
The 6-foot receiver chose the Bulldogs after also taking visits with California and West Virginia.
Thompson attended Boardman High School and originally committed to Eastern Illinois, playing four games as a true freshman to take a redshirt year before transferring to Northern Illinois.
Thompson ranks as the No. 694 overall player and No. 116 receiver according to On3’s Transfer Portal Player Rankings. He is the third wide receiver that Mississippi State has added through the portal, joining Jaron Glover and Brenen Thompson.
The Bulldogs are coming off of a 2-10 finish and failed to win an SEC game in the inaugural season for coach Jeff Lebby. However, Lebby is known for his high-powered offenses and it appears that loading up on receivers is a priority for him in the portal this offseason.
      High School
Thompson played wide receiver and safety for coach Seth Antram at Boardman HS. In nine games as a senior he had 23 receptions for 484 yards and four touchdowns and was a two-time first team All-American Conference selection and twice named a second team All-North East Ohio selection.
