Glenwood Jr. High School’s Lady Spartans eighth grade basketball tam ended their season on Monday night besting Howland, 42-30, and winning the All American Conference championship game played on the Glenwood hardwoods.
Glenwood ended the season with a 16-1 log.
Glenwood charged to an 18-2 first quarter lead and was never headed.
Maizy Green and Maddie Slevin paced the winners with 13 and 12 points respectively. Both canned a pair of shots from behind the arc.
Myah Soares chipped-in with 9 markers.
In semifinal play, Glenwood roasted Austintown, 36-16, to earn a spot in the title game against Howland.
Green paced Glenwood with 16 points, while Slevin added a dozen markers, and Soares and Annabelle Collins chipped-in with 4 points each to lead the winners.
Over two seasons, the team posted a record of 32-1.
Eighth Grade Boys
The Glenwood eighth grade boys White basketball team defeated the Glenwood Maroon, 36-22, to kick-off tournament play in a first-round battle. Both teams traded baskets early. Khiree Traylor contributed a pair of three-pointers for the Maroon to keep things tight.
Just before halftime, DaJuan Dukes hit a half court shot, giving the White a 20-15 lead at the break. From there, the White went on an early run to start the second half, maintaining their lead and securing the victory.
Leading the White team was Gavin Sentner with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Dukes added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Rounding out the scoring were Ricky Gozur, Keith Franklin, and Cash Felger with 3 points each, while Jordan Hodge added 2 points.
For the Maroon team, Caiden Hoff led all scorers with 8 markers, while Khiree Traylor had 6 points, Delonte Carter added 5 points, and Alek Rudiak had 3 points.
In second round tourney play, the White doubled the Warren White, 40-20, to advance to the championship game.
Leading the Spartans was Sentner with 19 points, while Dukes posted 9 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Also contributing were Keith Franklin and Cash Felger with 5 points each, while Jordan Hodge and Ricky Gozur added 2 points each.
With the pair of wins, Glenwood moved to 16-0 on the campaign.
Other Jr. High School Games
The Glenwood girls’ 7th grade basketball team earned a berth in the AAC championship game with a win over Austintown, 30-12.
Leading scorers for the Lady Spartans were Vanessa Toress with 9 points and Riley Sedlorsky with 5 points. Maggie Benson, Alanna Collins and Kyndall Higgs finished with 4 points each.
The Glenwood 8th grade boys White team defeated Warren White, 58-29, to wrap up the regular season. Leading the Spartans was Franklin with 19 points and 9 assists. and Sentner added with 16 points. Dominating the glass were Dukes, who contributed 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists, and Felger, who added 6 points and 10 rebounds.
