Boardman Local School cross country teams all claimed All American Conference championship titles in competition held at Howland Township Park.
Jacob Turek Tops Field
Of 59 Competitors
The Boardman High School boys won their third consecutive AAC Championship paced by sophomore Jacob Turek who claimed first place in a field of 59 harriers. Turek became the 10th fastest Spartan in school history with his time of 15:54, tying Alan Burns from 2013. Turek earned AAC Athlete of the Year for his showing.
Earning first team All-AAC laurels along with Turek were senior Dominic Theodore in fourth place, junior Dylan White in fifth, and senior Adam Nigro in seventh. Theodore’s time of 16:11 places him 18th all time in school history.
“A great team win-everyone contributed to this victory,” said Spartan Head Coach John Phillips, “we had four of the eight first team spots, and eight of the top 21 runners in the race.”
Earning second team All-AAC were senior Chase Moore for placing 13th and junior Jonathan Burgos-Perez for placing 15th. Honorable mention All-AAC went to junior Tommy Sullivan in 17th and sophomore Donovan Simione in 21st.
Setting new career-best times at Howland were seniors Theodore and Nigro (16:27), juniors Zach Diroff (19:50) and Jayden Mayhew (18:54), sophomores Turek, Simione (17:51), and Nathan Garland (24:38), and freshmen Ezekiel Doyle (22:39) and Cooper Moore (20:36).
Canfield placed second in the meet while Austintown Fitch was third.
Lady Spartan Olivia Brady
Defends AAC Title With
Record-Setting Time
After narrowly missing the championship by a single point last year, the Lady Spartans came back with a vengeance, scoring just 21 points to the runner-up’s 55.
Junior Olivia Brady defended her title as conference champion with a blistering 18:52.8, smashing her own course record by nearly 40 seconds.
Lady Spartan Haley Bero (sophomore) followed in second place with a personal best time of 19:31.9, giving Boardman a one-two punch that set the tone early.
Kealia Bravo (freshman), Lauryn Swantek (senior), and Moriah Doyle (junior) packed tightly in fifth, sixth, and seventh, sealing the victory before any other team had two runners across the line.
Boardman’s Matilda Mausteller (freshman) placed 13th, and Jemma Pavone (freshman) rounded out the varsity lineup in 20th.
Glenwood Teams Win
Middle School AAC Races
Glenwood Middle School’s girls team was led by Abby Marks who placed first overall. Marks was followed by her teammates Rylie Pavone who was second, and Zara Harlan who was third.
The rest of the top runners for Glenwood were Elliot Simpson (13th), Savannah Thomas (18th), Yahayra Tenecela (20th), and Alivia Brett (21st).
The Glenwood boys team was led by Austin Gillin who placed first overall.
Glenwood had five runners finish in the top-10 as Chase Walker was second, Ben Papa was sixth, and Owen Papini was seventh, and Michael Flores was tenth.
The remaining top runners for the Glenwood boys were Evan Letendre (15th), Nolan Cordon (17th), and Jonah Gluck (18th).
The win completed a ‘triple crown championship season for the Glenwood boys as they won the Suburban League Champions, were crowned Mahoning County and All-American conference champions.
