After easily disposing of Springfield Local in their final scrimmage game 13-0, the Cardinal Mooney baseball team continued their hot hitting and stingy pitching by sweeping a season-opening twin bill last weekend for a 2-0 start to their season.
Head coach Eddie Reese’s squad traveled to Wayne County last Saturday and defeated Norwayne, 9-1 in the opening game of their twin bill then followed that up with an 18-6 victory over Wooster Triway.
The win over Norwayne was the 50th – he is now 51-46 overall with the Cards – of Reese’s scholastic coaching career. He is in his fifth season at the helm of the CMHS diamond fortunes.
In their opener against the Bobcats (0-1), Tyler Wilson (3.1 innings, two hits, two strikeouts, no earned runs) and Todd Jones (3.2 innings, two hits, five strikeouts, no earned runs) combined to scatter four hits without allowing an earned run in their 9-1 victory.
Ben Oddis and Johnny Brenner paced the Mooney offensive attack with two hits apiece with the latter scoring twice and knocking in two tallies.
Will Petty and Brenner each doubled, Brenner also added a triple while Taco Verocco’s round tripper spearheaded the Cards’ 10-hit attack.
Against the Titans (0-1), Mooney scored at least one run in every inning as they belted out 12 hits with Jacob Gugliotta (3.0 innings, five hits, four strikeouts, one earned run), Ford Stacy (2.0 innings, two hits, one earned run) and Andrew Bushey (one inning, one strikeout) combining on a seven hitter, allowing just two earned runs.
Kaden Reese, Verocco and Oddis each had two hits to lead the Cards offensively with Ryan Reese, Kaden Reese, Brenner and Oddis ripping a double, and Verocco a triple in the contest.
Verocco knocked in four runs while Bushey, Stacy, and Luke Kollar plated two teammates apiece.
Mooney returns to action this week when they host Columbiana, then travel to Akron Archbishop Hoban at press time, concluding the week’s action when they entertain Howland High on April 2. Game time versus the Tigers is set for 5 p.m.
