Boardman Eliminates Mooney From Sports Schedules ‘Across The Board’
July 2, 2026 Edition
The Boardman Local School District has eliminated Cardinal Mooney from their slate of athletic schedules, beginning with the upcoming fall season.
Mooney does not appear on the Spartans grid schedule where the series between the two school dates back to 1968. Mooney and Boardman have squared-off in the gridiron 52 times with the Cardinals holding a 31-21 advantage in the series.
Boardman High School Athletic Director Jeff Hammerton said scheduling Cardinal Mooney “is not in our best interests,” adding it was five years ago the Boardman eliminated Ursuline from the football schedule.
Hammerton said Boardman has eliminated Mooney “across the board” for all sports.
The Spartans open this 2026 football campaign on Fri., Aug. 21 with a home game against the Youngstown Defenders (teams formed by a merger with East and Chaney High Schools).
The Mooney Cards open play on Aug. 21 with a home game against Mentor Lake Catholic.
