OHIO GOV. MIKE DeWINE, center, signed Senate Bill 52 last week that will memorialize a portion of Market St. in Boardman, between Western Reserve Rd. and Washington Blvd. as the Clarence ‘Sonny’ Smith Jr. Memorial Highway. The portion of the bill recognizing Smith was proposed by State Sen. Al Cutrona in recognition of his service and impact on Boardman and Mahoning County. Smith was a longtime member of the Boardman Board of Education, the Mahoning County Board of Elections and was a Mahoning County Republican Party Chairman. He served as co-chair of fund-raising efforts to build Stambaugh Stadium at Youngstown State University. His philanthropy included the donation of some 11 acres of land to Boardman Township where the Government Center now stands, as well as leading roles in the construction of Boardman Community Baseball’s Field of Dreams (along with Dr. John York and Chuck Schafer) and the Performing Arts Center at Boardman High School. Among those attending the bill signing ceremony were Brady Fagan, at left, and Hunter Hilgeman, at right, legislative aides to Sen. Cutrona.
